Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction Heads Online; Bid on Virtual Meetings with Sarah Jessica Parker, Ben Platt & More

As a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Broadway Flea Market & Grand Auction is going virtual for the first time in its history. The starry event, which benefits Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS, will take place on September 20 and will include live and silent auctions, one-on-one video chats with Broadway stars and the opportunity to bring home theatrical collectables. Every dollar donated helps those across the country affected by HIV/AIDS, COVID-19 and other critical illnesses.

In place of the fan-favorite autograph table and photo booth, Broadway Cares will be offering a limited number of one-on-one video chats with Broadway stars. The special guests participating in the sessions will be announced next week. Instead of tables of theatrical treasures from Broadway shows and organizations lining streets of the Theater District, special “flea market finds” and eBay “buy it now” bundles will offer fans another way to be part of the day.

Early bidding begins September 10 on silent and live auction items at broadwaycares.org. Live auction lots already up for bidding online include virtual Zoom meet-and-greets with Plaza Suite’s Sarah Jessica Parker, Matthew Broderick and John Benjamin Hickey, Jonathan Groff, Bernadette Peters and Ben Platt …

Pulitzer Board Widens Eligibility for 2021 Drama Prize

Source: Broadway.com | Posted: September 10 2020 @ 1:52 pm

With theaters shut down due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, the Pulitzer Prize board is updating eligibility requirements for its 2021 prize for drama. The organization announced the amendments on September 10.

“The spread of the COVID virus has closed theaters but has in no way dampened the creativity of the nation's playwrights," said Pulitzer co-chairs Stephen Engelberg and Aminda Marqués Gonzalez in a statement. "In this year, of all years, we wanted to honor the work that is being done. The shows are going on, even if the audience is remote.”

The Pulitzer Prize for Drama is presented to a distinguished play by an American author, preferably original in its source and dealing with American life. Per usual, eligible works include full-length dramas by American authors that opened in the United States between January 1, 2020 and December 31, 2020. For the 2021 award, eligible entries may also include plays that were scheduled to be produced in theaters in 2020 but were postponed or canceled due to the pandemic. In addition, plays produced and performed in places other than theaters, including outside, in site-specific venues or online, will also be eligible. Head here for full submission details.
