Aretha Franklin Biopic Respect, Starring Jennifer Hudson, Gets Delayed Again

The release date for the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect has been pushed back again. Originally announced to hit theaters in 2020, the film was first pushed back to January 15, 2021. MGM Studios has announced that audiences will have to wait another seven months with the new release on August 13, 2021. Tony nominee Liesl Tommy directs the film with Oscar winner and Broadway alum Jennifer Hudson taking on the lead role of Franklin.

Six-time Tony winner Audra McDonald is among a slew of stars who appear in the Aretha Franklin biopic. The cast features Tony winner Heather Headley as famed gospel artist Clara Ward, Hailey Kilgore as Franklin's sister Carolyn, Saycon Sengbloh as her sister Erma, Tituss Burgess as Reverend Dr. James Cleveland, Oscar winner Forest Whitaker as Franklin's father, recording star Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington and more.

The movie features many of the songs that drove Franklin to stardom, including "Respect," "I Say a Little Prayer," "Think," "(You Make Me Feel Like a) Natural Woman" "You've Got a Friend," "Dr. Feelgood," "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man," "Spanish Harlem" and "Young, Gifted and Black." Stage Stars Jennifer Simard & Jessica Vosk Launch True Crime Podcast Killing It On Broadway with Guest Kristin Chenoweth

True crime podcasts are all the rage, and now stage faves Jennifer Simard and Jessica Vosk are getting in the game with Killing It On Broadway, a new series featuring stars discussing infamous cases linked to their home states. The weekly podcast will launch on Friday, October 30, with first guest Kristin Chenoweth revealing a personal connection to the Oklahoma Girl Scout murders.

Simard was playing Sarah in the eagerly anticipated revival of Company when Broadway shut down in March. She received a Tony Award nomination in 2016 for playing a gambling-addicted nun in Disaster! and has also been seen on Broadway in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Shrek the Musical, Sister Act, Hello, Dolly! and Mean Girls. Her off-Broadway credits include Drama Desk-nominated turns in the musicals I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change and The Thing About Men.

Vosk was playing Elphaba in the Broadway smash Wicked when the musical celebrated its 15th anniversary in 2018. She made her Broadway debut as an understudy in The Bridges of Madison County and also appeared in Finding Neverland and Fiddler on the Roof. Magic Goes Wrong Returns to the West End for Holiday Season

Magic is coming back to the West End! Mischief Theatre's Magic Goes Wrong is returning to the London stage for an eight-week run at the Vaudeville Theatre beginning on December 10. Directed by Adam Meggido and co-created by Mischief Theatre and magic legends Penn & Teller, Magic Goes Wrong will run through January 31, 2021.

Leading the cast will be Bryony Corrigan as Spitzmaus, Roxy Faridany as Eugenia, Dave Hearn as The Blade, Henry Lewis as Mind Mangler, Henry Shields as Sophisticato, Jonathan Sayer as Mickey and Nancy Zamit as Bär. The show follows a hapless gang of magicians presenting a charity event. As the accidents spiral out of control, so does their fundraising target.

Audience capacity has been reduced to comply with COVID-19 guidelines for social distancing plus robust risk mitigation. In addition to hand sanitation, face coverings and track and trace, other measures will include contactless tickets, temperature testing and the deep clean and sanitation of the theatre.
