Ronald Harwood, Oscar-Winning & Tony-Nominated Scribe, Dies at 85

South African dramatist Ronald Harwood died in his Sussex home on September 8. The Oscar-winning screenwriter of The Pianist died of natural causes, his agent Judy Daish confirmed to the BBC. Harwood was 85.

Born in Cape Town on November 9, 1934, Harwood studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in London before becoming a writer. His first novel All the Same Shadows was published in 1961. His first screenplay, Private Potter, followed in 1962. His play March Hares was performed in 1964.

Harwood's celebrated play The Dresser garnered a 1982 Tony Award nomination. The Dresser became a movie in 1983 and a TV movie in 2015. His play Taking Sides ran on Broadway in 1996. His plays also include Quartet (which also was adapted as film), Taking Tea With Stalin, Taking Sides, Ivanov, The Ordeal of Gilbert Pinfold and more. Harwood earned Olivier Award nominations for Quartet, Taking Sides and The Dresser.

Harwood also won accolades for his screenwriting. In 2003, he won a Best Adapted Screenplay Oscar for Roman Polanski's World War II drama The Pianist, starring Adrian Brody. His adaptations of The Dresser and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly also brought him Oscar nominations. …

A slew of stage favorites joined forces for a moving performance to promote support and awareness for Be An Arts Hero, a grass roots campaign composed of arts and culture workers, unions and institutions pushing the Senate to allocate relief to the arts and culture sector of the economy. Eva Noblezada, James Monroe Iglehart & More to Sing Out to Benefit Animal Rescue

Eva Noblezada earned her second Best Leading Actress in a Musical nomination for Hadestown.

These Broadway stars will be rallying together for furry friends. On September 20, the one-night-only concert Broadway Treats: A Canine and Kitty Rescue Production will benefit Animal Lighthouse Rescue (ALR). Founded and hosted by NYC actor and ALR volunteer Alexa Cepeda, Broadway Treats is set to stream live on YouTube at 8PM ET. Tickets can be purchased here.

The lineup for the concert includes Eva Noblezada, James Monroe Iglehart, Mare Winningham, Ashley Park, Solea Pfeiffer, Ryan Vasquez, Colton Ryan, Austin Scott, Aaron Alcaraz, Kathryn Allison, Isa Briones, Jordan Brown, Chaundre Hall-Broomfield, Julia Harriman, Dorcas Leung and Jonalyn Saxer.

ALR is an organization that rescues cats and satos (stray dogs) from Puerto Rico with their sister shelter in Puerto Rico (El Faro de los Animales) and a dedicated team of volunteers in New York City, ALR helps homeless cats and dogs find their forever home. Last year, the concert raised over $22,000 for ALR.
